Amateur boarders riding for a cause

VAIL The Snowboarding Outreach Society’s Outreach Series snowboarding competitions continue in Keystone next weekend.

The series, which is one of the largest amateur snowboarding competitions in the country, started in Steamboat the last weekend of December and moved to Vail Saturday and today.

A giant slalom will be held in Keystone on Jan. 12, followed by a slalom event on Jan. 13. Anyone is welcome to compete and proceeds go to support teaching at-risk children how to snowboard.

For more information, contact Chad Young at the Snowboard Outreach Series at (970) 845-7040, or visit http://www.sosoutreach.org.

Little dog houses on the prairie

DENVER The Colorado Division of Wildlife completed a study that showed there is more than double the amount of land inhabited by black-tailed prairie dogs in northeastern Colorado than originally thought.

In 1999, the Department of Natural Resources showed 49,099 acres of prairie dog habitat in eight northeastern Colorado counties. The DOW conducted a survey a year later, which was recently completed, that showed 108,640 acres inhabited by the animal.

DOW officials said the figures could help keep the animal away from threatened or endangered protection.

The DOW will continue the study, which will eventually include 29 counties.
