I-70 EB closed at Frisco, Silverthorne due to pileup, shelter available

Interstate 70 leading towards the basin of Summit County seen Tuesday, March 27, 2018 near Loveland Pass. CDOT is planning a $550 million project to expand and improve I-70 from Floyd Hill to Idaho Springs.

Numerous spin-outs, accidents and generally dangerous conditions due to blowing snow and wind have forced a safety closure on I-70 Eastbound at Exit 203. Safety closure is also in place at Exit 180, East Vail. There is currently no estimated time of opening.

A massive, dozen-plus care pileup occurred around 1:30 p.m. on I-70 eastbound before Exit 205. The exit remains closed as of 4 p.m.

Colorado State Patrol is now directing drivers stranded on roads to a shelter located at the Silverthorne Recreation Center, 430 Rainbow Drive in Silverthorne. Another shelter has been created at Summit Middle School in Frisco. All drivers are urged to redirect themselves to the shelter for a warm place to wait the weather out.
