Howie Wowie brings beach vibe to Ski Free Sunday at Howelsen Hill

Ski Free Sunday will bring a beach vibe to the Howelsen Hill Ski Area this week as the Howie Wowie Wave Bash offers participants the chance to shred a frozen wave — actually a quarter pipe — as part of an informal jam session.

Organizers said this is not a competition but a fun opportunity to learn new tricks and collaborate with your fellow shredders.

“This event continues to gain in popularity every season,” said Lucas Laverty, the event organizer and a Parks and Recreation maintenance worker. “The unique aspect of this event is the camaraderie that builds among participants and how each person creates something distinct during each of their wave rides.”

The ski area opens at 10 a.m., and from noon to 1 p.m. the Expression Session will provide skiers and riders of all ages and abilities the opportunity to practice and exhibit their best jumps, slides and other tricks while feeding off the energy and creativity at the event.

Following the Expression Session at 1:30 p.m. organizers will host a glove raffle and offer participants a chance to win a brand-new Jones Bi-Deck Snowskate, courtesy of Ski Haus. The Outrun Snackbar will be serving up food and drinks all day, and DJ Rocksteady Teddy will be on hand spinning classic reggae beats.

Participants are encouraged to wear tie-dye and neon outfits to fuel the beach vibe, and Howelsen Hill crew members will be on hand providing prizes and merchandise to participants during the event.

The Howie Wowie quarterpipe remains open until the ski area closes at 4 p.m.
