Housing authority progressing

— More than 20 people have applied to be the director of the newly created multi-jurisdictional housing authority, Routt County Commissioner Nancy Stahoviak said.

Stahoviak, vice president of the Yampa Valley Regional Housing Authority, said the field of applicants includes local, state and national candidates.

The Housing Authority board, which was chosen by Routt County commissioners and the Steamboat Springs City Council, hopes to have a director in place by May, she said.

The director and an administrative assistant will have an office in Bogue Hall of Colorado Mountain College. The county will provide two surplus computers for the staff.

The housing authority also is working on hiring an accounting firm and an attorney, which will be especially helpful as the housing authority transitions from the Regional Affordable Living Foundation, Stahoviak said. The group is considering local attorneys involved in real estate and local government, and an accountant with local government experience.

Recently, the housing authority received $159,000 to finance a portion of the department’s start-up costs from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs.

One of the housing authority’s goals is to develop a housing plan for the community; another is to determine how successful RALF’s self-help housing program has been. To accomplish the latter goal, the group plans to hold a roundtable discussion with contractors, city and county planners and others, as well as public meetings to get comments about the project.

The housing authority board also had a daylong retreat recently targeted at members who had not been a part of RALF, Stahoviak said. Of the 13 people appointed to the housing authority board, at least half served as members of the RALF board.

“They’ve all got a lot of energy; they’ve got a lot of good ideas,” Stahoviak said of the housing authority board members.

The housing authority board meets from noon to 2 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month at the conference rooms in Centennial Hall.
