Hot dog eating contest set for Saturday

Luke Graham

— The Hungry Dog owner Brad Somers doesn’t really have any great tips when it comes to eating contests.

“Everyone has their own technique,” Somers said. “Some people starve themselves, some people dip their hot dog buns in water.”

Various techniques and lots of hot dogs will be on display at 2 p.m. Saturday in front of The Hungry Dog when Somers hosts the fourth annual hot dog eating contest.

It serves as a customer appreciation day with food giveaways and lots of prizes.

Of course, the main event is the hot dog eating contest at 2 p.m.

Hot dog aficionados and competitive eaters can sign up anytime at The Hungry Dog. The free competition is limited to 25 competitors.

The record, which was set last year, is held by bartender Dick “Gooch” Shine, who manhandled, demolished and simply crushed nine hot dogs in five minutes last year.

“Some people consider it a sport,” Somers said. “It’s become a fun thing. The first one we did was for our grand opening. I think we had three competitors. Then we had five, and last year, we had 22.”
