Holly Rogers: Are we going to let them ‘pave paradise and put up a Marriott?’

Dear Editor,
“Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone.”
This line from a 1970 Joni Mitchell song made me think about our current controversy on the project being proposed on Pine Grove Road. Remember this song?
“They paved paradise and put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique and a swinging hot spot
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone.”
The song goes on to say:
“They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum
And they charged all the people a dollar and half to see ‘um
Don’t it always seem to go
that you don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone.”
My version: “They paved paradise and put up a Marriott.”
I do understand about private property rights, but everyone should take a long and hard look at the legacy of the place we live in and love and what we will leave to future generations. More hotels or more trees?
