Steamboat hockey hoists the hardware

Steamboat Springs High School students celebrated the Sailors hockey team in the school gym Tuesday following the team’s 4-2 state championship victory over Glenwood Springs on Monday night in Denver.
Returning to town Tuesday, the team was given a police escort from the bottom of Rabbit Ears Pass to the high school where family members, faculty and students waited to celebrate their accomplishment. The team was welcomed to the school as the sounds of Queen’s “We Are the Champions” blasted through the speakers in the Kelly Meek Gymnasium.
This is Steamboat’s first hockey state championship title and the school district’s first team-sport championship since the girls soccer team took the title in 1998.
