Historic Routt County! wins state award

— Members of a citizens group intent on preserving historic buildings throughout Routt County are hoping their latest award will build momentum for a plan to preserve the region’s classic western barns.

Historic Routt County! recently received the Caroline Bancroft Award from the Colorado Historical society. The award is given annually to groups based in Colorado communities of less than 50,000 population.

Historic Routt County! earned the award for its restoration work on the Routt County National Bank in downtown Steamboat Springs, and for emergency stabilization of the Rock Creek Stage Stop near Yampa.

“We’re thrilled with the restoration of the Routt County National Bank building, because it’s so visible (at the corner of Eighth Street and Lincoln Avenue) and because that beautiful building was underneath there,” Kathe McCoy said. She is president of Historic Routt County!

The bank is owned in tandem by the local Masonic Lodge and a group of investors called The Steamboat Agency. Prior to the restoration, the old red brick and native sandstone building was covered with white stucco and wooden shingles on a mansard roof. The architect on the preservation effort was Jan Kaminski of Mountain Architecture Design Group, and the work was carried out by Fox Construction.
