Steamboat Springs — Routt County’s historic buildings will be on display next weekend as it hosts a three-day conference on historic preservation.

Colorado Preservation, Inc. will bring people from around the state to study the public and private partnerships that were formed to save historic buildings and places in Routt County.

On the Road Again, a conference from Sept. 20 22, is an annual event sponsored by the nonprofit organization and serves as an annual retreat for its members.

It is the second time Colorado Preservation, Inc. has come to Routt County.

The nonprofit held its first conference in Routt County 10 years ago.

This time around, the conference will take members on tours of downtown Steamboat, North Routt, Hayden, the Carpenter Ranch and South Routt.

The conference will incorporate Historic Routt County, the Yampa Valley Land Trust, Yampatika, city and county officials, the Nature Conservancy and U.S. Forest Service.

Steamboat Councilwomen Arianthe Stettner said the nonprofit is partnering with Historic Routt County to put on the conference.

“It’s a chance for local communities to showcase some of their local projects and efforts,” Stettner said.

Visitors will get the chance to see historic properties in downtown Steamboat and its famous springs.

They will also visit ranches and old school houses in North Routt and South Routt’s Rock Creek Stage Stop, which is placed on Colorado’s Most Endangered Places list.

Centennial Hall, which was converted from an old power plant, is also on the list of sites to see.

Although registration will not be held until Sept. 20, a free lecture open to the public will be given Thursday on the economic benefits of historic preservation.

Stettner said public members can join the conference for $50 and she expects 100 to 110 people to attend.

Seating is limited, but preservation consultants, elected officials and interested residents are expected to attend.

The conference is also a chance for Colorado Preservation, Inc. members to hold their annual meeting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

“It is a chance to get together, swap stories and showcase what we have done,” Stettner said.
