Benefit dinner supports Routt County Search and Rescue
September 26, 2003
The annual Routt County Search and Rescue Fund-raiser has raised almost $12,000 for the volunteer emergency service group since it began eight years ago, Search and Rescue member Scott Havener said.
The money raised has been used to help with the purchase of a Ford Excursion, a flatbed truck, snowmobiles and four-wheelers, Havener said.
This year’s fund-raiser is from 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesday at the Bear River Bar and Grill. Tickets are available from any Search and Rescue member and at Johnny B. Good’s. The tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door and include dinner, two silent auction sessions and door prizes.
Items to be sold in the auction include snowmobile tours, helicopter rides, savings bonds, massages, oil changes, a microwave, a DVD/VCR combo, clothing, a hunting bag and Steamboat lodging packages ranging from two nights to weeklong stays, said Dawn Alperti, Search and Rescue member and fourth-year auction chairwoman.
“This is one of our major fund-raisers,” Havener said. “Our budget was cut this year (by $20,000), so it’s even more significant this year. Also, it just makes people aware of what we do and how we do it. We’re 100 percent volunteers, so we rely on donations.”
The Colorado Search and Rescue Card is another way Search and Rescue obtains funding. The money from the cards, which hikers and outdoor enthusiasts can purchase for $3 per year, helps fund Search and Rescue missions, Havener said. Expensive missions can run into the tens of thousands of dollars and quickly drain the budget provided by Routt County and the city of Steamboat Springs.

About 200 people attended last year’s fund-raiser, and donations helped make it one of the most profitable events yet, Havener said.
Havener said the fund-raiser is always a fun time, but it doesn’t exempt the Search and Rescue Crew from being on call. The Search and Rescue members will be at the fund-raiser with pagers on, as usual, just in case.
