Hearing set to determine whether to unseal documents in Zimmerman homicide case
Steamboat Springs — A hearing has been scheduled to determine whether documents currently sealed in the Ed Zimmerman homicide case should be unsealed.
The hearing is scheduled for 11 a.m. May 27.
Last week, the Steamboat Pilot & Today filed a request to have the documents unsealed.
The Routt County Sheriff’s Office believes Lucas Johnson and his wife, Kristen, were responsible for Zimmerman’s death. The couple is still in custody at Routt County Jail.
A three-day preliminary hearing for the couple is not scheduled to begin until Aug. 31.
During an April 1 hearing, Judge Shelley Hill asked District Attorney Brett Barkey why the affidavits still need to be sealed.
“I’m extremely anxious to reverse that course,” Hill said at the hearing.
Barkey said there were one or two more potential witnesses who needed to be interviewed. He said he was concerned about information being released because there were unique details about the crime that only the perpetrators would know.
