Health briefs: Parkinson’s Support Group helps patients, caregivers
The Yampa Valley Parkinson’s Support Network meets at 5 p.m. the second Monday of every month at Casey’s Pond. All patients, caregivers and family members are welcome to attend. NWCH reminds residents to protect themselves from hantavirus
Northwest Colorado Health, formerly the Visiting Nurse Association, advises precautions when cleaning — or just being in — areas inhabited by rodents.
Hantavirus is a serious, potentially fatal respiratory disease carried primarily by deer mice, which can be abundant in rural areas. Cases and deaths from the virus have increased in Colorado over the past several years; most cases occur in the spring and summer.
People can be infected by inhaling dirt and dust contaminated with deer mouse urine and feces. The illness can begin one to six weeks after exposure. Early symptoms include fatigue, fever and muscle aches and may also include pain in the legs and back, headaches, dizziness, chills and abdominal problems.
If a person experiences these symptoms and has potentially been exposed to rodents, he or she should seek medical attention immediately. Hantavirus can be prevented by avoiding areas infested by rodents and following safety recommendations when cleaning up possible rodent food sources and nesting sites around the home, work areas or campsite. Casey’s Pond hosts community happy hour
Casey’s Pond Distinctive Senior Living hosts a happy hour from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the last Thursday of each month at Casey’s Pond, 2855 Owl Hoot Trail. Food, wine and beer is available along with the opportunity to see old friends or meet new ones. Attendees can learn more about life at Casey’s Pond and receive a tour of the community. VNA offers healthy sleep tips for children
Good sleep is essential for healthy growth and development. Research shows children who do not get enough sleep can be irritable and are more likely to be obese and do poorly in school. The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association offers the following tips to help children sleep well:
• Establish regular naptime and bedtime routines.
• Avoid cutting back on naps to get children to sleep through the night — they will become overly tired and sleep poorly.
• Turn off TV and other screens at least one hour before bedtime, and keep your child’s room a screen-free zone.
• Put children to bed drowsy to help them learn to fall asleep on their own. Learning to fall asleep independently will help them to put themselves back to sleep when they wake at night.
• Do not put them to bed with a bottle or sippy cup — it’s bad for their sleep and their teeth.
• Help your child sleep with a cool room (cooler than 75 degrees), a bedtime story and calming music.
• The National Sleep Foundation recommends toddlers age 1 and 2 get 11 to 14 hours of sleep (including naps). Children age 3 to 5 should get 10-13 hours of sleep.
Variety of ongoing support groups meet this week
• A bereavement support group meets from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at Rollingstone Respite House. The group is open to anyone grieving the loss of a loved one. Call 970-871-7629 prior to attending the first meeting.
• A Christian support group for parents of children who have been called home by God meets at 6:30 p.m. Monday at 27441 Brandon Circle. For more information, call 970-870-7879.
• A domestic violence support group for women meets from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesdays at Advocates Building Peaceful Communities. Call Diane at 970-879-2034 before attending.
• A depression, anxiety and bipolar support group meets from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in Conference Room 2 at Yampa Valley Medical Center, 1024 Central Park Drive. The group provides support, education and tools to help with everyday life. Family and friends are welcome. Call 970-819-6751 for more information.
• The Steamboat Meditation Recovery Group meets at 5:30 p.m. Thursdays at the Buddhist Center of Steamboat Springs, 2250 Copper Frontage Road, No. 202. The group also has a recovery-based yoga beforehand at 4:30 p.m. The group will explore recovery through meditation, book study and open discussion. Meetings are open to all faiths and addictions. • The Heartbeat of Steamboat support group meets from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays at the Rollingstone Respite House, 480 Rollingstone Drive. The group is for those who have lost a loved one or friend.
