Hazel E. Steele (1916-2004)

Former Oak Creek resident Hazel E. Steele passed away March 1, 2004, in Boulder. She was 87.

Hazel was born April 12, 1916, to Joseph and Lydia Long on the family’s homestead near Oak Creek. She was one of 12 children.

She married Victor Steele on Aug. 25, 1934, in Oak Creek. Hazel was a homemaker most of her life.

The family moved to Louisville in 1952, when Victor went to work at Rocky Flats near Golden. Hazel worked at the post office in Louisville and also at a nursing home in Boulder.

The couple returned to Oak Creek in 1972 after Victor retired. Hazel went to work for the Routt County Social Services Department, from which she retired in 1981.

Hazel and Victor returned to Louisville in 1982 because of Victor’s declining health. He passed away shortly after their return to Louisville. Hazel remained there until 2002, when she moved to the Good Samaritan Home in Boulder.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband; two daughters, Myrna Kay and Sherill; two great-grandchildren, Joseph and Robert Simpson; three brothers, John, Michael and Albert; and six sisters, Anna, Doris, Helen, Alice, Mary and Jean.

She is survived by a daughter, Vicki Sears of Boulder; two sons, Milton Steele of Louisville and Perry Steele of Alpharetta, Ga.; two sisters, Flavia Herbold of Denver and Geraldine Hinkle of Yampa; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was held Friday at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Oak Creek. Burial followed at Oak Creek Cemetery.
