Hayden wrestling grabs 3 titles at meet

Area wrestling teams hit the mat in weekend action

The Hayden High School wrestling team was loaded down with medals Satuday when it returned from a meet in Rangely. The Tigers won three weight classifications, landed five wrestlers on the podium and finished second as a team.

“It was a good tournament for everyone,” Hayden coach Ty Camilletti said. “Our kids looked really good. We wrestled really tough, right there to the last second of a lot of matches. There were a lot of times where our kids had to tighten their belts, suck it up and come back. And they did.”

Junior Treyben Letlow continued his dominating season by winning the 215-pound bracket. Sophomore Chad Terry won at 119 pounds and freshman T-Lane Mazzola bested the field at 103 pounds.

“T-Lane, he showed a lot of heart in winning his first high school championship,” Camilletti said. “He had a lead in the final match but got caught in a cradle. He had to fight for about a minute in the cradle but got it done.”

Freshman Ryan Domson just missed joining his teammates’ success, losing in his 145-pound final at the buzzer.

“He was leading most of the way,” Camilletti said. “It was a real heartbreaker. He’s a good wrestler, and he’s going to be in plenty more finals matches.”

Sophomore Nick Williams was third at 130 pounds and his older brother, senior Koleman Williams, was fourth at 152 pounds. Scott Armbruster was fourth at 125.

The team returns to action at 9 a.m. Saturday for a tournament in Leadville.

David Strait leads Rams

David Strait continued his strong streak on the wrestling mat, finishing second in the 140-pound weight division of a tournament in Rangely on Saturday.

To this point, Strait has made the finals in each tournament he’s attended and lost Saturday for only the third time all season.

“He’s been wrestling good, as good as he’s ever wrestled,” Rams’ coach Jay Whaley said.

Strait marked Soroco’s only podium finish, but it got strong performances from several other wrestlers. Tristan Palyo finished 2-2 on the weekend and was one match away from placing. Freshman Robert Sales, filling in for an injured Lauryn Bruggink at 103 pounds, also finished one spot out of the points.

“Robert, he wrestled tough,” Whaley said. “He beat several varsity wrestlers that will be wrestling at the regional tournament. He’s improved a ton.”

Soroco will next wrestle on Saturday in Leadville.

Sailors struggle at Conifer

Steamboat Springs wrestling coach Shane Yeager was at a loss for words, even a day later. He said his team had its worst meet of the season Saturday at Conifer.

“We have a bunch of freshmen and this is the longest their season has ever been,” he said. “Now, they have to learn to get through that. We got a few wins, but everyone got beat out of the tournament.”

The team returns to action Saturday in Leadville.

“We need to have a better week of practice this week so we can go into the weekend with some confidence, not the opposite of that,” Yeager said.
