Hayden senior sets school hurdle record

Melinda Mawdsley

Be it jumping, throwing or running, Hayden High School senior Keenan Bruchez is off to an impressive start this track and field season.

One week after qualifying for the Class 2A State Track and Field Championships in discus, Bruchez set a school record in the 110-meter high hurdles, winning the race in 15.64 seconds. He held the previous record of 16.39, which he set last year.

“He has been performing unbelievably,” coach Kevin Kleckler said. “And he has a super attitude about it, too.”

Bruchez also placed second in the long jump, soaring 19 feet, 8 inches on Saturday. It was the first time Bruchez had competed in the event this season.

Fourteen teams competed at Saturday’s Eagle Valley Invitational in Gypsum, and the Hayden boys placed eighth overall.

But it really was a day of fourths for the Tigers.

“We did well,” Kleckler said. “I’m excited about the kids doing well. It’s a young team.”

Bruchez scored additional points with his fourth-place finishes in the triple jump and discus. Teammate Tyson Sweetser was fourth in shot put. Tyson Letlow was fourth in the 200 meters.

Kylee Sweetser placed fourth in the triple jump. She teamed up with Jessica Martin, Holli Salazar and Kaitlyn Corriveau to place fourth in the 800-meter medley relay.

Martin and Sweetser each ran 100 meters. Salazar ran 200 meters, and Corriveau anchored with a 400-meter leg.

Hayden hosts the Hayden Invitational at 1:30 p.m. Thurs–day at Moffat County High School. Field events will start first, and running events are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

Soroco, West Grand, North Park, Rangely, Meeker, Paonia, Grand Valley, Moffat County’s junior varsity and two schools from Wyoming also are invited.

“Soroco, of course, we’re going to have to watch those guys,” Kleckler said. “(Coach) Gary (Heide) really has them going.”
