Hayden School Board approves deal

Contract with Pepsi Cola will give $10K to athletic department

The Hayden School Board on Wednesday approved a contract with Pepsi Cola that will provide the school’s athletic department with $10,000 for using only Pepsi-produced beverages in vending machines and concession fountains.

Hayden High School Athletics Director Kevin Kleckler called the deal, which will go into effect next year, a “win-win situation.” The contract stipulates that the school will receive $2,000 a year for the next five years, along with powdered Gatorade and coolers for the sports teams.

Kleckler said the first thing he’d like to do with the money is replace the dim lights at the football field with newer, brighter ones but that he would further discuss that and other needs with Principal Nick Schafer and School Board members.

In other business:

n Hayden High School teacher Kipp Rillos reported on the progress of a new technology class that has been building computers and learning how the internal parts function. Rillos said 15 of the computers his class has built are up and running in the school library.

Two of the students in the class gave a Power Point presentation to the School Board showing how they assembled the computers. Students said they saved $370 per computer on average by building them themselves.

“We were able to build better computers than we could have been able to afford,” Rillos said.

n Troy Wertenberger and Jody Camilletti were re-sworn in after Camilletti won over challenger George Wixson in the recent election. Wertenberger ran uncontested. Because no changes were made in the make-up of the board, members chose to retain the same officers.

n The School Board approved a high school graduation date of May 27, a Thursday. Several board members said they wanted the date to be on a Saturday or Sunday so that out-of-state family members would have time to travel to the graduation, but the state track championships in Pueblo created a schedule conflict.

n Hayden Schools Superintendent Scott Mader announced that the school district received a full recommendation from the Energy and Mineral Impact Assistance Board to replace the carpet in the middle and high schools. Mader wanted to thank high school student Ray Curtis for helping to put together a Power Point presentation that “certainly swayed some votes.”

The School Board approved a “Parent Involvement Policy” to meet federal standards of parental involvement in the education of their children.
