Hayden rips Paonia

Tigers move to 4-0, 2-0 in WSL

The Tigers’ long bus ride home from Paonia was made much easier after their 34-6 win Friday night at Paonia’s homecoming game. After an uneventful, scoreless first quarter, Tigers coach Shawn Baumgartner said Paonia scored first on a Tanner Ridgeway rush as the second quarter opened, only to have sophomore Coy Letlow return the ensuing kickoff to take a 7-6 lead.

With the game lingering at a 14-6 Tigers lead heading into the fourth quarter, Hayden grabbed three consecutive interceptions to break the game open with 20 unanswered points.

“They capitalized on our mistakes, and we couldn’t get the momentum going,” Eagles coach Jeremy McCormick said, citing his teams countless dropped passes. “We didn’t execute, and they played well.”

The scoring rally started with rushing touchdowns from Letlow, on his way to 162 rushing yards, followed by Mitchel Doolin and Brandon Ford, and a final interception picked off by Letlow, who returned the ball 35 yards for a touchdown to seal the win.

“We just methodically pounded the ball down the field,” Baumgartner said. “Our offense line did great, as well as our D, all the way around.”

The win puts the Tigers at 4-0 overall and 2-0 in league play.

Doolin passed 5-9, distributing the ball among Aaron Haskins, Dave Gullett and Chuck Hines. Russell Waugh, Haskins and Ford each had one interception.
