Hayden resident pursuing option to recall marijuana vote

Matt Stensland

— A Hayden resident has taken the next step to let voters decide whether marijuana cultivation should be allowed in Hayden.

The unknown resident is seeking to override Ordinance 666, which was passed by the town council Aug. 6 in a 6-1 vote. The ordinance allows for the regulated, commercial growing of marijuana.

Hayden Town Clerk Sharon Johnson said that, on Wednesday, the resident turned in the committee affidavit, which is the first part of the process for circulating a petition. The three committee members still need to turn in their affidavits, Johnson said. She will then need to verify they are registered voters.

Ordinance 666 was legally published Aug. 16. From that date, the people who would circulate the petition have 30 days to collect signatures. They need at least 105 verified signatures to get the issue on the ballot. There is not enough time to get the issue on the November ballot, so a special election would be held.

With the threat of a public vote, Hayden resident Rodney McGowen has put his plans for opening a grow operation in the Valley View Business Park on hold.
