Hayden needs HATS

Volunteer program helps local students

— The Hayden School District is looking for HATS.

Helping All to Succeed, or HATS, is a volunteer program that allows adults from the community to work with elementary children during the school day.

The program was implemented last year with success, Hayden Valley Elementary School building administrator Rhonda Sweetser said.

“The community interaction helps so much with the kids here,” Sweetser said. “We have a wide range of people coming in.”

The volunteers will be assigned to a teacher, but the volunteer can select which grade level he or she would like to help.

“The teacher has it set up,” Sweetser said. “They don’t have to do anything other than show up.”

Typically, volunteers work with students for 30 minutes to an hour once or twice a week on material such as letter identification for younger students or math help for older students.

Students in fourth and fifth grades have a biography project this year that is very involved, and the HATS volunteers could work with students during the project, Sweetser said.

“They work with any type of subject that needs help,” Sweetser said.

The elementary teachers are looking for people who can commit to a schedule during the week, so they can plan the HATS volunteer into the course schedule.

“If they can’t come a certain week we are understanding, but it’s good if they can come,” Sweetser said. “It’s important to get that consistency.”

Volunteer forms are available at the elementary school office or people can sign up by phone at 276-3756.
