Hayden girls hoops grabs big win at De Beque

— Hayden High School girls basketball set some goals following Friday night’s tough loss to Plateau Valley, and they met them in a big way Saturday at De Beque.

Implementing a mix of varisty and junior varsity players against a shorthanded Dragons squad, the Tigers rolled Saturday, winning 40-14.

“I had all of my JV suited up and rotated them in and got them experience, which they needed,” Hayden coach Michelle Wilkie said. “They did well.”

The Tigers were led by Olivia Zehner’s 12 points and Darian Murphy’s and Chancey Graham’s seven points apiece.

Wilkie said she wanted her group to start fast after being shut out in the first quarter Friday night, so it jumped out to a 9-2 lead that ballooned to 19-9 at halftime. Hitting free throws, cutting down on turnovers and testing new things offensively were the focus Saturday.

“What I was pleased with is last night our first quarter killed us, and they came out right away Saturday,” Wilkie said. “We were consistent in all four quarters and that’s what I wanted. We set some goals.”

Hayden improved to 6-10 on the year and 2-5 in league play. The Tigers finish the season on Feb. 21 at cross-county rival Soroco.
