Hayden girls basketball to face Plateau Valley, Paonia

— The Hayden High School’s girls basketball team (12-2) has won five straight and shouldn’t be in any danger of relinquishing its place atop the Western Slope League tonight against hapless Plateau Valley (1-9), which has lost eight in a row. The Cowboys have struggled on offense, failing to score more than 21 points in all but four of their nine losses this season. The 5:30 p.m. game is in Colbran.

Hayden’s 4 p.m. Saturday home showdown against Paonia (9-3) should be a different story. The Eagles won last year’s Class 2A state championship. Although they haven’t been quite the same team this season, at 9-3 they’re still among the state’s best. The game could decide this year’s league champion.
