Hayden girls basketball squad falls in opener

Joel Reichenberger

It made for a 0-1 start, but Hayden High School girls basketball coach Michelle Wilkie saw positives in her team’s 45-35 loss to Meeker on Thursday in the Cowboy Shootout Tournament in Meeker.

“For the first game of the season, it went pretty dang well,” Wilkie said. “I was very pleased with the whole effort and the attitude.”

The Tigers were led by Kara Cozzens with 14 points. Taylor Hagar had 12, Grace Wilkie had six and Darian Murphy had three.

Michelle Wilkie praised the team’s effort and nearly all aspects of its game.

What was lacking, she said, was consistency. Where at times the squad took care of the ball, other times turnovers took a toll. Sometimes the defense was stout. Other times it was out of position.

Hayden led by six early but fell behind for most of the game. It pulled with three late but couldn’t take over.

Hayden plays Friday in Meeker against Caprock Academy, who lost in a landslide against Soroco on Thursday night.

“It was the first game, so we have a lot of things to work on,” Wilkie said. “We have to decrease our turnovers. We were forcing the ball, but the girls hustled the whole game.”
