Hayden girls basketball can’t catch Vail Christian by surprise

— Another slow start came back to haunt the Hayden High School girls basketball team Saturday at Vail Christian.

The Saints were coming off a deflating loss Friday night against Soroco, so the Tigers were hoping to catch them on their heels a bit, but it was Vail Christian that came out striking en route to an eventual 54-30 win. Hayden now is 4-9 on the season.

“That was our goal to catch them by surprise,” Hayden coach Michelle Wilkie said. “We just came out flat.”

The Tigers managed just 17 points through the first three quarters but finally played solid team basketball in the fourth, Wilkie said, but it was too little, too late.

Kara Cozzens led the way with 10 points. Taylor Hagar added nine points, Darian Murphy had six and Chancey Graham had two.

Hayden is heading into a difficult week with Meeker, North Park and West Grand on the schedule, but with the end of the regular season looming, Wilkie said she’s going to encourage her team to enjoy playing together for the final two-week stretch.

“We only have two weeks left,” she said. “We have to put the fun back into it.”

Hayden will be at Meeker (9-3) on Thursday for a 2:30 p.m. game.
