The Hayden High School girls basketball team knew it was heading into the season with a young lineup, and the ups and downs of that were made clear Friday and Saturday as the team opened its season with a small tournament in Kiowa.

Friday, the squad beat the hosts, Kiowa, 30-23. Saturday, the team lost against Limon, 45-18.

At times, that youth and inexperience — the team played three juniors, four sophomores and a freshman — was exposed.

At times, it also was an asset.

“They did some things a more veteran team wouldn’t have done, but they were just trying to make things happen,” coach Michelle Wilkie said. “It’s pretty exciting to see where they could go.”

Hayden got 11 points from Alex Camilletti against Kiowa, plus seven from Hannah Wilkie and six from Paige Barnes. Wilkie scored 10 against Limon and Alison Ingols had eight.

“These kids just want to get better,” Michelle Wilkie said. “It’s really cool to see what they’re doing, their attitude and what they want.”

Hayden, 1-1, next plays starting Friday in a tournament in Wyoming.
