Runners leave the starting line during the Turkey Trot 5K and 1-mile fun run in Hayden in November. Proceeds from the event went to the Hayden Valley Elementary Health & Wellness Team. The team is planning a health fair at the school this Thursday.

— The Hayden Valley Elementary Health & Wellness Team is gathering the Hayden community for a health fair this Thursday.

The team is composed of school staff and community members interested in improving the health of students and the community as a whole and is part of an overall school district effort to promote health and wellness.

The district was recognized for its efforts in health in February, when it received a Healthy School Champion award for 2016, ranking seventh among 87 applicants statewide.

The health fair was dreamed up after a January survey of school parents, families and staff asking for input on how to improve community health.

"As a health team we really have been working hard at trying to respond to needs that we have noticed around the HVE community," said Kristin Mortenson, a librarian at the elementary school and co-leader of the Health & Wellness team along with parent Anna Davis.

Mortenson said through the survey the team learned that parents want more ideas about how to keep students healthy outside of school, and many parents are unaware of the resources available in the community to help with this.

"Parents were wanting more resources on health and wellness and nutrition and ideas for their children outside of school," Mortenson said.

Representatives from the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association, Grant Futures Prevention Coalition, Hayden Parks and Recreation and Reaching Everyone Preventing Suicide will attend the fair to educate attendees about their services, along with more than a dozen other groups.

Mortenson said the team is encouraging the public to attend the event, not only families of elementary students.

"Our mission for our Health & Wellness Team is to promote the physical, emotional and cultural vitality of the HVE community, and that includes the community of Hayden," Mortenson said. "We're reaching beyond HVE. We really want to create activities that engage the whole community."

A limited number of free dinners will also be provided through the Hayden School District Food Services Program.

The event runs from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, and dinner will be available from 5:30 to 6:30.
