Steamboat Springs — Hayden officials plan to take another look at the rules for signage used by businesses.

Signage was among the items discussed by the Hayden Town Council during their regular meeting Thursday.

“Everyone seems to be in agreement that we want to work with the business owners and look at the existing code,” Town Manager David Torgler said.

If the town wanted to strictly enforce its existing sign rules, several businesses would be in violation. Sandwich boards and large sail-like banners are not allowed but currently are being used by some businesses.

Business owners have said the signage is important to draw business from people traveling through town on U.S. Highway 40.

Torgler said there have been complaints from residents who were worried about the signs blocking the sidewalks or being misleading.

Two local business owners spoke at the meeting. Those complaining about the signs did not speak.

Torgler said Hayden Police Chief Greg Tuliszewski is going to hold a meeting to discuss the issue with business owners. Recommendations that come out of that meeting will be forwarded to the town’s planning commission, which formally would recommend changes to the town’s sign code.

Torgler said that process could take a couple of months, and there likely would not be immediate changes in sign enforcement.

“If it’s not unsafe, we’ll allow for it to stay,” Torgler said.
