Two were somewhat of missed opportunities and the other was just a good team, Hayden High School boys basketball coach Mike Luppes said. The end result was an 0-3 start to the season for the Tigers at a three-game tournament in Wyoming, the Carbon County Classic.

The team lost to Cheyenne South, 63-47, to Hanna Elk Mountain, 59-37, and finally to Encampment, 70-27.

“The first two games we came out tight and got ourselves in a hole early,” he said. “Those were teams we could have been competitive with, but we didn’t play the way we were capable. The third game, Encampment, they just schooled us, plain and simple.”

The losses left the team plenty to work on. Luppes pointed to turnovers and defensive lapses, but also a court sense he expects to develop through the season.

“We need to react a little quicker to where we aren’t thinking so much about what we want to do,” he said. “That said, we are seeing improvement every night. We hope that continues and we’ll go from there.”

Next up for the Hayden squad is a trip to a three-game tournament in Manila, Utah.
