— Incumbent U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton (R-Cortez), has a Democratic challenger in the fall election for Colorado’s sprawling 3rd Congressional District, which includes Routt and Moffat counties.

The Vail Daily reported this week that veterinarian Steve Sheldon, who owns an animal hospital in Gypsum, has declared his candidacy. Sheldon described himself as a fiscal conservative.

He is currently the only Democratic challenger on the ballot, but Sheldon still needs to win the Democratic Party’s nomination at the state assembly April 16 in Loveland. Democratic party officials in Eagle County have hinted they think members of the party at the state level are encouraging former state legislators to join the fray.

“I have been a successful veterinarian and animal hospital owner for almost 30 years,” Sheldon wrote on his Web page. “I feel my ability to communicate and form relationships with all types of people, from all walks of life, has contributed to my success. I tell it like it is, to a fault, sometimes.”

He added that he would voluntarily impose a six-year term limit on himself should he be elected.

“Congress was designed to be staffed by concerned, hard-working citizens, doing their civic duty for a short period of time and then returning to their former lives,” Sheldon wrote.
