Golfers swinging in start of season

The Steamboat Springs High School golf team opened its season Thursday at the Battlement Mesa Golf Course with a second-place finish.

Durango won the opening tournament with a team score of 228. Steamboat and Fruita tied for second at 233, and defending state champion Montrose finished fourth with a 235.

“It was a pretty good showing for us,” new golf coach Steve Dodson said. “We’re off and running now.”

The coach was happy that Steamboat finished with its three top players all finishing in the 70s on the 18-hole Battlement Mesa Golf Course.

Exchange student Hans-Peter Bacher led the team with a round of 77. Ryan Brees and Kenton Gamache chipped in with rounds at 78.

Scott Peterson (88) and Tucker Campbell (92) also traveled to the first tournament.

The team was without two of its stronger players, Paul Berry and Tucker Smalley. Berry was out of town, and Smalley is recovering from a broken arm.

Dodson said conditions at the course were challenging Thursday. Golfers had to deal with strong winds and fast greens in the opening tournament of the season.

The team was scheduled to play again Friday at Rifle Creek in Rifle.

The golf season begins a week earlier than the rest of the fall sports. Practices for the remaining sports including football, soccer, volleyball, tennis and cross country will begin Monday along with dance and cheerleading.
