Golfers swing, miss at tourney

John F. Russell

The three members of the Steamboat Springs golf team had plenty of time to absorb the events of the past couple of days as they made the long drive back to Steamboat from Alamosa.

The team traveled to the state tournament at the Cattails Golf Club with high hopes but ended up watching Montrose beat out Mullen for the 2003 state title.

“This is a really young team,” coach Ryan Barclay said. “They will all be back next year, and I think we learned a lot from this experience.”

Steamboat got off to a rough start in Monday’s opening round. The scores improved Tuesday, but it wasn’t enough to make a run at the top spots.

Steamboat finished in 13th place with a two-day total of 489.

Montrose held on to win the team title with a total of 435. Mullen was second at 442. And, despite a strong second-day run, Cheyenne Mountain placed third at 447.

The good news for the Sailors on Tuesday was that after a slow start, Paul Berry and Kenton Gamache finished with solid rounds of 78.

Gamache improved the most by trimming seven strokes off his opening-day round of 85. Berry managed to knock two strokes off his first-day total.

Tucker Smalley also improved from his opening round of 84 to finish at 80.

“I’m still not happy with the way I played,” Gamache said. “I wasn’t striking the ball well at all.”

Gamache said he struggled through the first 27 holes of the tournament, but a slight adjustment helped him shoot his best golf on the final nine holes. He finished that stretch at one-under par.

“I think Paul and Kenton finally started to pull things together at the end,” Barclay said. “We beat Montrose at the regional tournament, so I know we can play with the best teams in the state. We just need to learn how to be more consistent and show up on the days when it really counts.”

The individual state title goes to Tom Glissmeyer of Cheyenne Mountain who matched Montrose’s Erik Lundberg stroke for stroke through 36 holes.

Glissmeyer claimed the title in a sudden-death playoff against Lundberg. It was the second-time in two years that the 4A state title has needed extra holes. Last year, Glissmeyer lost to Cortez golfer Shea Sena in a playoff at the Boomerang Golf Links in Greeley. This year Sena finished in third place.
