Golf tourney helps fight breast cancer
The Rally for the Cure Golf Tournament in Steamboat Springs has managed to raise more than $14,000 in four years for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
“This year we had more than 100 merchants and local businesses come forward to support this event,” organizer Linda Danter said.
This year’s Rally for the Cure women’s golf tournament will take place July 20 at the Steamboat Golf Club. Danter said the tournament isn’t sold out, but she warns women not to wait.
“The deadline to enter is whenever it fills,” Danter said. “But I expect that to be pretty soon.”
Danter has organized the event in Steamboat Springs since it started. The first year, the event raised just more than $1,000. But the amount of money the tournament raises has grown steadily each year and in 2003 the event brought in $5,748. Danter said 100 percent of the money raised goes to support the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s mission to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease.
Female golfers in all 50 states will join in this year’s crusade to increase breast cancer awareness and will help raise important research funds for the Dallas-based Komen Foundation. The program has generated more than $12 million in its eight-year existence and has earned five national awards.
Danter is hoping to fill all 64 slots for the Steamboat Rally for the Cure event.
“We are hoping to sell it out again in 2004,” Danter said.
In addition to player’s fees, money will be raised through a silent auction (open to players and nonplayers), as well as several other fund-raising activities.
Danter is hoping to increase the amount of money raised this year through hole sponsors and allowing players to buy mulligans and puttigans during the tournament.
Danter said she got involved with the tournament because she thinks breast cancer affects almost everyone in the community.
“We all know someone, or will know someone, who has been impacted by breast cancer,” Danter said.
