Girls fall short despite big effort

— The Steamboat Springs High School girls lacrosse team couldn’t pick up a win Thursday night, but coach Betsy Frick said her team played as well as it has all season.

The team lost 15-10 on the road against Summit.

“We played by far our best game of the season,” Frick said. “The girls showed huge improvement. They were definitely working together.”

Kaelyn Kauffmann scored four goals for Steamboat. Becky Brown had three, Brittney Starks two and Brittany Brown one.

The Sailors matched Summit step for step in the first half. Steamboat got up 2-0 in the first half, then the game was tied at 6-6, 8-8 and 9-9 before the Tigers got an advantage.

“They were really happy with how they played, and I was very impressed,” Frick said.

The team next plays at home at 1 p.m. Saturday against Pueblo West.
