Girls end league losing streak

Boys stumble against Panthers

— There were mixed results in Panther territory Saturday night as the Steamboat girls broke a four-game league losing streak and the boys stumbled again, dropping a 57-40 game to Delta.

Rejuvenated by the return of their two seniors, Emily Hines and Jessica Flores, the Sailors girls team beat the Panthers 83-53.

“We had a good effort. Everybody was back and had really balanced scoring,” Sailors coach Bruce Alston said.

A strong half-court press kept the Panthers to 13 points in the first half of the game, while the Sailors were able to capitalize on early offensive transitions to earn some easy points.

“Our half-court defense was pretty excellent, was excellent in the first half,” Alston said. “It made passing difficult. It really won the game for us. We shot them down the first half and it’s hard to come back.”

Jennifer Weber led the team in scoring, tallying up 13 points, and Bayli Stillwell followed with 10 points.

Although hurt by too many turnovers, the Panthers did have a major threat in Jess Bucheim, the forward whose solid board play contributed to her 13 points for the night.

“We had a disappointing loss to Palisade,” Alston said. “We felt that we could beat them. After losing last night, they were really determined to have a good game today.”

After Friday night’s massive 49-47 upset from the Palisade Bulldogs, who had not won a game all year, the Steamboat boys dropped their second league game of the season to Delta.
