Girls basketball coach won’t return

— Steamboat Springs High School Athletics Director Richard Lee confirmed Friday that head girls basketball coach Ashley Berggren will not return this season to coach. Lee wouldn’t give a reason for Berggren’s departure.

Berggren, who coached for two years at Steamboat, led the team to a 7-16 record last year.

Before coming to Steamboat, Berggren was a star at the University of Illinois in the mid-1990s. Berggren left Illinois as the all-time leading scorer in school history (2,089 points) and as fifth all-time in the Big Ten Conference.

She was named Big Ten Player of the Year while playing at Illinois from 1994 to 1998. She also spent a year playing for the Chicago Condors in the American Basketball League before the league folded.

Principal Mike Knezevich and Berggren did not return phone calls Friday.
