Gathering focuses on climate change

— Yampa Valley residents concerned about the effects of global warming can help call attention to the issue and have fun doing it today during the local observation of Step it Up 2007.

Interested people are invited to join others in skiing, snowboarding, walking, kayaking and cycling. It’s part of a nationwide effort to put America on the path toward reducing carbon emissions 80 percent by 2050.

The Step it Up campaign is the umbrella organization for thousands of similar gatherings around the nation today.

The intent is to highlight iconic landscapes and outdoor recreation treasures that could be affected by climate change.

Locally, skiers and boarders will meet at the bottom of the Steamboat gondola at 10 a.m. Walkers will meet at the same time at the Stockbridge Transit Center to walk the Yampa River Core Trail. They may return by bus if they choose.

Kayakers will meet at Backdoor Sports at 3 p.m. and cyclists will gather at Orange Peel Bike Shop at 3 p.m.

The day will conclude with a candlelight dinner at Dos Amigos at 6 p.m. Diners are asked to bring a dish and a candle. Beverages will be available for purchase.
