Fundraising campaign lassos nearly $16K for spur-shaped holiday decorations

Jo Sarafis has launched a fundraising campaign for spur shaped holiday lights that would be installed on Lincoln Avenue downtown.

— Yeehaw.

Spur-shaped holiday lights will return to the light poles on Lincoln Avenue in downtown Steamboat Springs thanks to a successful fundraising campaign launched by a local woman.

“It has just been phenomenal,” Jo Sarafis said of the response to the Save our Spurs campaign she recently launched. “I really appreciate it.”

In two weeks, campaign supporters raised $15,744, which has already been used to purchase 22 spur-shaped holiday decorations.

They will replace the city’s spur decorations that fell into disrepair a few years ago.

Sarafis launched the campaign because she felt Steamboat Springs was losing some of its western heritage.

She specifically didn’t feel the new snowflake-shaped holiday decorations that replaced the spurs adequately represented that heritage.

“When I first moved to Steamboat 20 years ago and saw the spurs, I thought ‘that’s amazing,'” Sarafis said last month. “I’m sure every other community and ski area in Colorado has the snowflakes. Those are great, but our spurs hold a really unique place at Christmas time.”

Donations to the campaign came from a mix of local businesses, part-time residents and downtown residents.

Sarafis is planning a celebration to thank the donors.
