Moffat County deputies injured during fuel theft arrest reported south of Wyoming border on Thursday
Three Moffat County Sheriff’s Office deputies sustained minor injuries while attempting to apprehend a suspect involved in an alleged fuel theft at a gas station in Craig on Thursday.
According to a statement from the sheriff’s office, Geomar Gomez-Hernandez, 35, was driving a white Ford pickup truck that was reportedly involved in a fuel theft at the Maverik gas station on Victory Way in Craig on Thursday morning.
Craig police officers responded to a report of a fuel theft around 11 a.m. and attempted to initiate a traffic stop before the vehicle failed to yield, according to a news statement.
Deputies then assumed the pursuit and performed multiple “high-risk traffic stops” as the vehicle attempted to flee and rammed multiple Moffat County Sheriff’s Office vehicles.
The pursuing deputies eventually arrested Gomez-Hernandez just after 12 p.m. when they were able force the vehicle to a stop on Colorado Highway 13 near mile marker 119, according to the news statement.
During the pursuit, “three Moffat County Sheriff’s deputies sustained minor injuries” but were released from medical care as of 5 p.m. Thursday. Police said Gomez-Hernandez was transported to the hospital for precautionary reasons before he was booked into Moffat County Jail on multiple charges.
The area where the arrest occurred is roughly 40 minutes north of Craig and just south of Baggs, Wyoming.
A public information officer with Colorado State Patrol said troopers assisted in the response but referred questions to the Craig Police Department and the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office.
The reported arrest in Moffat County comes weeks after police made multiple arrests for two alleged fuel thefts in separate cases involving incidents at the Pilot Flying J gas station in Steamboat Springs.
On Dec. 5, Steamboat police arrested two men, David Caboverde and Osnel Perez Palacio, for allegedly using a box truck to pilfer 6,000 gallons of fuel from the gas station. On Dec. 13, Steamboat police arrested another man, Victoriano Cayetano Leon, as he was allegedly in the process of stealing roughly 500 gallons of diesel fuel from the same location using a white Ford F-450 truck.
Two of the three suspects arrested in the Steamboat fuel theft cases remain in jail awaiting further court proceedings, according to Routt County Undersheriff Joshua Carrell. Cayetano Leon was released last week after paying a $5,000 bond.
Steamboat Springs Police Det. Sgt. Sam Silva told the newspaper earlier this month that the local fuel thefts reported in Steamboat are suspected to be linked to “large organized crime and gangs.”
Nicholas Cordova, a patrol sergeant and the public information officer for the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, said Thursday evening the department had received “a couple of” reports recently about fuel thefts in the county, but this was “the first, specific arrest made directly in relation to a fuel theft.”
“It’s very early in the investigation but we do plan to get with Steamboat and Routt County as well as Grand County and see if it’s related, how it is related, but at this point we are still trying to wrap up our initial investigation before we reach out to our partners,” added Cordova.
