Frigid weather expected to hit Steamboat as another strong storm approaches

A prolonged pattern of snowfall in Steamboat Springs over the holiday period continued into Monday with more storms expected to hit the area this week.

According to local meteorologist Mike Weissbluth, who posts twice-a-week forecasts to SnowAlarm.com, “a break in the weather highlighted by a frigid Wednesday morning will be over by Thursday as another storm brings a round of light snowfall.”

After the Steamboat Resort recorded 15 inches Sunday morning at the top of the mountain with 4 inches at mid-mountain, Weissbluth said a cold front hitting the area was likely to continue to bring snowfall into Tuesday morning with another 2-5 inches likely to accumulate at the resort. The front is also expected to bring winds gusting up to 30 mph by late Tuesday morning.

“Some dry air behind the storm and ahead of our next storm for Thursday will combine with the arctic air mass to bring frigid subzero temperatures for Wednesday morning, with lows in town forecast to be between -5 F and -15 F, well below our 4 F average,” said Weissbluth.

“Mountaintop temperatures are forecast to be a bit warmer, but still between 0 and -10 (degrees),” he added.

Higher temperatures are forecast to hit the low-20s in town Wednesday before a weak wave of energy and moisture approaches Thursday and brings chances of additional light snow.

According to Weissbluth, a break in the weather is expected Friday before “a stronger storm is forecast for the weekend.”

Steamboat snowpack currently stands at 109% of the 30-year median, according to meteorologist Joel Gratz at OpenSnow.com.
