HAYDEN — Just before 7 p.m. Friday, a fire broke out on private and state land near the rest area at mile marker 101 on U.S. Highway 40 west of Hayden. About 25 to 30 acres of mostly sage brush burned according to West Routt Fire Protection District Chief Dal Leck.

Lightning is suspected to be the cause after storms swept through the area.

West Routt Fire Protection District, Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue and Oak Creek Fire Protection District firefighters responded to the fire. Routt County Sherriff’s Office Deputies also assisted.

With two brush trucks and a tender from West Routt as well as a brush truck and tender each from Steamboat and Oak Creek, the fire was under control Friday night.

“We did a lot of good last night, and it laid down last night,” Leck said.

West Routt and Oak Creek firefighters will do mop up Saturday and hope to have the fire completely extinguished Saturday or Sunday.

“It looks good today,” Leck said.
