Friday night crash near Hayden closes U.S. Highway 40

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — U.S. Highway 40 near Hayden was closed Friday night after a serious two-car crash.

West Routt Fire Protection District firefighters, Colorado State Patrol troopers and Routt County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to the crash at about 11:10 p.m. near mile marker 113. West Routt Capt. Dan Parrott said the location of the crash was near Routt County Road 70 between the railroad tracks and the bridge crossing over the Yampa River.

The crash involved a pickup and a smaller sport-utility vehicle.

“It looks like at least one vehicle lost control and collided with the the other,” Parrott said.

One person had to be extricated from a vehicle.

Two people were taken to Memorial Regional Health in Craig.

One driver who was in the most critical condition was taken to UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center.

Colorado State Patrol was investigating the crash.

Traffic was detoured around the closure.
