Freshmen do well in first year

The Steamboat Springs freshman volleyball team finished its first year of high school volleyball with a winning record.

The 12-girl team coached by first-year coach Clint Koehler was 12-5 overall — with the five losses coming against Western Slope League opponents.

Koehler, who grew up playing volleyball, wasn’t sure what to expect when he agreed to coach Steamboat’s youngest prep players.

“Their skill level was a lot higher than I thought,” he said. “We could work on advance stuff. We ran a libero (defensive player) for part of the season, which is new to high school volleyball. The girls were strong enough players.”

Koehler said one highlight of the season was a come-from-behind win against Eagle Valley on Oct. 1. After dropping the first game, they came back to win the second and third.

“It was the first time we did that,” Koehler said.

He added that most of the players were interested in playing club volleyball in the offseason.

“This will be a good up-and-coming team as they grow up together,” he said.
