Freestylers’ strong results set up big trips

— The freestyle skiing women of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club continued their strong season last weekend at the Rocky Mountain Division Championships in Telluride, and none may have stood out more than an athlete almost too young to even be there.

Kenzie Radway, 11, had to ski up several age groups in the U15 division, and she shined, placing fourth in that class at the weekend’s single moguls competition. That, plus a strong season of results in her first year on the divisional tour, earned her rookie of the year honors.

Steamboat picked up plenty of other strong results at the event, especially in the duals competition. There, Avital Shimko won, Jaelin Kauf was second and Lane Stoltzner third, rounding out a Steamboat sweep of the podium.

Stoltzner was second, Kauf was third, Shimko fourth and Lindsay Mustard 10th in the women’s single moguls.

On the boys side, Landon Wendler was second among U15 skiers.

Wendler, Zach Rosa, Tyler Strnad, Bridger Boyd, Kauf, Shimko and Radway were all named to the division’s junior national championships moguls team. That event takes place next week in Park City.

Kauf and Shimko, meanwhile, are in for an even bigger trip. Both were named to the country’s Junior World Championships squad. They’ll compete in Valmalenco, Italy.
