— With cold weather looming and higher monthly energy bills coming for winter, Yampa Valley Sustainability Council is hosting a free do-It-yourself weatherization clinic on Nov. 15 for local homeowners and landlords to learn about simple steps to improve residential energy efficiency and comfort before winter fits full force.

The complimentary clinic will feature informational tables, giveaways, advice from local experts and four short educational sessions. The mini classes, offered in a rotating 10-minute format, will address common issues that certified energy auditors find in local homes when performing residential energy assessments on behalf of the sustainability council.

Topics will include energy and water-saving quick fixes, air sealing and weather stripping around existing windows and doors, air sealing for heat leakage into attics and cold stale air infiltrating from crawlspaces, insulating hatches, LED lighting upgrades, radon kit testing information and EcoBroker check list advice.

Energy auditors and local construction remodeling contractors will be available to answer questions

“Improving your home’s insulation and sealing air leaks are the fastest and most cost-effective ways to reduce energy waste and make the most of your energy dollars,” according to the U.S. Department of Energy. “Saving energy reduces our nation’s overall demand for resources needed to make energy, and increasing your energy efficiency is like adding another clean energy source to our electric power grid.”

Giveaways at the clinic will include LED energy-saving bulbs and Energy Saver booklets for tips on saving money and energy at home. Drawings will be conducted for energy efficiency devices such as smart strips, low-flow showerheads and a programmable thermostat.

The clinic will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15 at Strawberry Park Elementary School. The evening is supported by the Clean Energy Collective, whose representatives will be on hand to answer question about the 15 percent remaining capacity available for purchase by residents and small businesses in the community solar array in Craig.

The DIY weatherization clinic is a new adult education offering from YVSC that also currently offers DIY zero waste kits for local special events. Contact info@yvsc.org or 970-871-9299 for more information.
