Frankie Hannah: Trash clean-up day near high school warranted

In the spirit of this beautiful spring day, I am writing this as a call to take pride in our town. I was walking my dog this morning and around this time of year I will pick up trash on my nearby trails. I was struck by how little trash there was, and of the trash that was there, the vast majority was plastic.

As we know there is a big concern about all the plastic in our oceans, rivers, creeks, ect. Please be aware of your plastic.

I was making my way home and went through the high school campus and noticed how much trash was there. I know that any concentration of 15- to 18-year-olds will generate a lot of trash and I know that from once being a teenager and having teenagers a few years ago, there is not always an awareness that extends much past their personal space or their peers space.

I know that’s a generalization, but a suggestion for the school administration is to have a volunteer clean-up period or two or three around our schools. Great for their awareness. You have the people power and I am sure many who would like to do this.

I have faith in our children these days that they have the will to do the right things for the good of many. Finally, attention smokers — the world is not your ashtray.

Respectfully,

Frankie Hannah
