Four-goal streak ends Sailors’ season

Boys lacrosse team falls in first round of playoffs

— At least they played well.

That was the lasting thought Steamboat Springs High School boys lacrosse coach Jay Lattimore said he took away from his team’s final game of the season.

The Sailors lost Tuesday in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs, the No. 10 seed falling on the road against No. 7 Golden, 8-7.

It was disappointing, Lattimore said, but there was some comfort.

“I’m just happy these guys played their hardest,” he said. “It was a good game between two evenly matched teams. There were no excuses, which feels good.”

The loss makes for Steamboat’s second first-round tournament exit in as many years, after surging to the state semifinals in back-to-back seasons the two years prior.

Tuesday, the team had a shot.

The Sailors trailed, 4-3, at half, but stepped up in a big way in the third quarter, scoring three consecutive goals to take a 6-4 lead midway through the third quarter.

Golden found a way to answer, however, and put together a streak of its own, one Steamboat could never fully nullify.

The Demons responded first within 30 seconds of the Sailors taking that two-goal lead. Golden then scored again after just 30 more seconds. It took just about one minute for the score to tie.

Golden then added two more goals to take a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

“Their backs were against the wall, and they responded well,” Lattimore said. “They had some good athletes who ran past our guys a couple of times.”

Jackson Draper had three goals for Steamboat. Davis Petersen and Drew Williamson each had two.

The Sailors got one final goal with about 3 minutes remaining to pull within one. They had several opportunities to shoot for the tie in the final moments, but couldn’t connect.

Steamboat finishes 10-6 on the season.

“We put a pretty complete game together,” Lattimore said. “We can keep our heads high.”
