Five Steamboat wrestlers advance

The Steamboat Springs wrestling team heads into the second day of regional competition with all but one wrestler still alive in the consolation bracket.

No Sailor won an opening-round match, but freshman Ben DeLine responded in his first consolation match at 135 pounds, defeating Glenwood Springs’ James Nelson by major decision, 13-5, to move into the second day of competition.

Steamboat’s Joey Melius (171 pounds) was the only Steamboat wrestler eliminated Friday.

Everyone else — Houston Mader (125), Andy Morell (130), A.J. Carmack (140) and Alex Centner (215) — lost their first matches and received second-round byes.

The second day of the Class 4A Region 3 tournament continues at 9 a.m. today at Montrose High School. The top four place-winners in each weight class will advance to next weekend’s 2005 Colorado State Wrestling Championships.
