Officials investigating cause of blaze at rental property

— Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue and a private insurance company are investigating the cause of a fire early Saturday morning that gutted a Ski Trail Lane rental property.

Steamboat Springs Fire Marshal Jay Muhme said Fire Rescue personnel arrived on scene at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday and fought the fire until about 5 a.m. Firefighters later returned to the scene to extinguish remaining hot spots.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and Muhme said not much would be done until the property owner’s insurance company arrives to assess the scene in a couple of days. He did not know where in the five-bedroom, four-bathroom duplex the fire started.

The property, which is listed to the Joseph S. Titus trust, is part of a duplex managed by Mountain Resorts. Muhme said there were no renters on the side of the duplex that caught fire, but that guests had to be evacuated from an adjoining four-bedroom property.

The house did not burn to the ground, as was erroneously reported in a Record entry in Monday’s Steamboat Today. The exterior of the home remains largely intact, though the interior suffered extensive damage.

“Basically one side of the duplex was a total loss. The structure is still there, but the interior is pretty well a total loss,” Muhme said.
