Fire burns 5 acres before crews get control

Crews from Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue and the Oak Creek Fire Department made quick work of a brush fire that burned five acres near Thorpe Mountain south of Steamboat Springs Thursday afternoon.
“We got paged out just after noon for a controlled burn that had gotten out of control,” said Michael Arce, a captain for Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue. “The flames were moving fairly quickly up this draw. We didn’t have a whole lot of problem knocking them down, and we did have some help from the person who was doing the controlled burn in the first place.”
The five-acre area was mostly sage brush, but there were also several large homes in the area. Those homes were never threatened by the flames, Arce said.
“We got a pretty good handle on it, and we don’t expect it to go anywhere else,” Arce said.
The fire was contained shortly after 1 p.m., and firefighters began the job of putting out hot spots and monitoring the burn area.
