Figure skating club ready for Spring Show

— The members of the Steamboat Springs Figure Skating Club are busy this week putting the finishing touches on the Spring Ice Show.

“It’s the biggest show of the year,” said Stacy McAllister, the club’s head coach. “We’ve been working on this show since January, and it’s something that I, and all the skaters, look forward to.”

The skaters will take the ice for the show at 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The show is free, but the club will be seeking donations to support their programs at the door. McAllister said the event will include a number of solo skates as well as several big group numbers. This year’s theme is, “Billboard’s Top Hits Through Time.”

Soloists include Ava Maynard, Natasha Curzon, Indigo Enger, Sage Turek, Nicolette Boeri, Kaelyn Radway, Marisa Scott, Lily Frinks, Gillian Cook, Helena Maynard and Ellie Brown. Sisters Madison and Serena Van Engelhoven will also perform a duet.

“I came up with the theme back in September, and everybody is excited about it,” McAllister said. “We’ve been working to find music that will work, and the past several months the skaters have been picking out costumes.”

The show will include the classic B.J. Thomas tune “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head,” along with music from the BeeGees, Joan Jett and Survivor. McAllister said there will also be more recent numbers from the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s and a few tunes from today’s top-10 countdowns.

The show will mark the end of the winter season; however, McAllister said the club will continue to stay busy through the spring. The skating rink will offer an introduction to figure skating class that runs April 2 to May 14. She will also accompany seven skaters to a big competition in Fort Collins May 10 to 12.

“The ice arena will close down for three weeks this spring (from mid-May until the first week of June), but we just kind of keep going,” McAllister said.
