— A fall drive on the Flat Tops Scenic Byway or a trip to the Front Range will cost area drivers significantly less money this fall than they did last year.

Gas prices in Steamboat Springs and across the state are continuing to drop, and the average price of a gallon remains well below what the prices were during the same time in 2014.

The average cost of unleaded gas in Steamboat was $2.74 per gallon on Sunday, 89 cents cheaper than the average cost of a gallon on the same day last year.

The price at some local stations fell as much as a dime per gallon in the last week.

Statewide, the average cost of a gallon of unleaded fuel cost $2.45.

According to data compiled by gasbuddy.com, Pitkin County had the highest prices in the state, with fuel there costing an average of $3.96 a gallon.

Huerfano County, between Pueblo and Trinidad, had the cheapest gas prices with a gallon costing an average of $2.20.

Analysts predict the price of gasoline will continue to decline in the coming weeks as gas stations switch to a winter blend of fuel that is less costly.
